One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that an injury means you have to stop everything.

We just talked last week about how there's usually a middle ground between resting and pushing through. But, what does that actually mean?

Our philosophy is simple: modify, don't stop.

For most active people, staying completely inactive isn't just frustrating, it can make returning to your sport or routine feel even harder. The key is knowing what to modify and how to keep moving safely.

So, what does "modify, don't stop" actually mean?

It usually comes down to a few simple principles. Here's how we normally work through things with someone in pain.

Reduce the load. Not 100% of it though. You may need to change the intensity, distance, or weight, but that doesn't always mean shutting it down.

Find movements that your body tolerates. There are usually many options to keep moving in ways that are similar to your goal. Or, we can find ways that complement your goal while you can't actually do the thing you want to do.

Progress with purpose. As symptoms improve, we gradually build you back to the activities you love. Too often people feel a little bit better and dive right back in. A slow, progressive approach that's planned out means fewer setbacks.

We recently worked with a client who came in convinced they'd have to stop strength training because of persistent shoulder pain.

Instead of pressing pause on the gym, we adjusted a few exercises, modified their training volume, and created a plan to rebuild strength over time.

A few weeks later, they were back to training confidently. And, maybe more importantly, without feeling like they'd lost all of their progress.

That's the goal.

Our latest blog dives deeper into why "just rest" is often the most frustrating advice active people receive and what to do instead.

If you're trying to figure out whether you should keep training, take time off, or change your routine, you don't have to navigate it alone.
