Literally every week someone comes into our office and says they felt a tweak in their back when in the gym 6 months ago, had no idea what happened, and immediately put the weights down and walked out. Then, they tried to figure it out for months while also avoiding most things in the gym.
And, when we give our regular workshops out in the community, one of the most common questions I get is “Can I keep working out with my (shoulder/knee/back) pain?”
The answer is almost always yes.
One of the whole reasons I started DPP is because I thought way too much of healthcare was negative and told you what NOT to do. Your knee hurts, stop running. Your back hurts, stop deadlifting. Your shoulder hurts, stop lifting overhead.
Our whole goal is how do we keep you moving and active while you’re also recovering in the first place. Too many people think that if they have pain they have to stop lifting, going to the gym, or running. There are so many options to keep moving when you have pain.
If you have pain, don’t think you have to stop. You can modify a movement, try a lighter weight, pick a different movement, cross train with a different exercise, or a bunch of other things as well.
But if you're in this exact situation, we have an entire blog post dedicated to what to do if this sounds like you, including when to modify vs. when to stop. Give it a read, and see if can help you!
