From the PT Office:
A client came in recently who had an ACL reconstruction over 10 years ago and was now dealing with a new knee injury. He was frustrated, and understandably so.
As we assessed him, we realized something important: five or ten years ago, we would have treated this very differently than we do today.
Back then, we believed protecting the knee was mostly about strong hips and hamstrings.
What we know now, based on a large body of research, is simple:
Quad strength matters more than anything else for knee health.
Why We’re Sharing This
At District Performance & Physio, we believe good care means being willing to change.
Just because something works doesn’t mean it’s the best way.
One lesson has stood out over time: the more confident we are about something, the more open we need to be to learning better ways.
A Few Things We’ve Changed Our Minds About
-
Posture: There’s no single “perfect” posture that prevents pain.
-
Alignment & symmetry: Bodies are adaptable, not fragile.
-
CrossFit: When people enjoy training, they get stronger, and that’s a good thing.
-
Leg extensions: Essential for rebuilding quad strength, especially in knee rehab.
-
Manual therapy: Helpful, but not for the “magic” reasons we once believed.
