From the Clinic:
When something in your body suddenly goes “pop” or “tweak,” the first question is always:
How bad is it?
One of the most common points of confusion we hear is:
“Is this a sprain or a strain?”
They’re not the same, and knowing the difference can help you recover faster and smarter.
Sprain = Ligament (Joint Stability)
Ligaments are the stabilizers of your body
- Usually happens at a joint (ankle, knee, wrist)
- Often feels like a “pop” or snap
- Common signs: swelling, bruising, instability
Strain = Muscle or Tendon (Movement)
These are the movers of your body
- Common in calf, hamstring, shoulder, or low back (but can be any muscle)
- Feels like a pull, cramp, or tightness
- Common signs: spasms, weakness, soreness
The simplest way to remember:
Sprain = ligament
Strain = muscle or tendon
How serious is it?
Most injuries fall into 3 categories:
- Mild: small stretch, still functional
- Moderate: partial tear, more pain/swelling
- Severe: full tear
What to do right away
We now follow a more modern approach than “just ice it.”
First 48 hours (PEACE):
- Protect it
- Elevate it
- Compress it
- Avoid overdoing anti-inflammatories
- Pay attention to symptoms
After 48 hours (LOVE):
- Start gentle movement
- Keep a positive mindset (it matters!)
- Add light cardio
- Progress to strength + balance work
When to get help
There are the obvious ones:
- You can’t put weight on it
- The joint feels unstable
- You’re getting numbness or tingling
Don’t wait on those.
But honestly, the bigger misses are the less dramatic ones.
This is where most people lose time:
- It “kind of” feels better, but not fully
- You’re still modifying workouts more than you want
- You’re avoiding certain movements because you don’t trust it
- It keeps coming back every time you ramp things up
That’s the gray area where people wait way too long and could get better much faster by getting some help.
The bottom line
Whether it’s a sprain or strain, the goal is the same:
get you back to doing what you love, safely and fully.
If something doesn’t feel right, we’re here to help.
