From the Clinic:

Physical therapy can get… complicated.

We love finding connections in the body and figuring out how everything fits together. Sometimes that’s helpful. But, sometimes, it gets in the way.

Too often, people are given complex explanations for pain when the simplest answer hasn’t even been tried.

And when things feel overly complicated, people don’t get better.

A Real Example From the Clinic

Recently, a group fitness coach came in with knee pain.

He’d already seen another provider. He got some short-term relief, but the pain kept coming back. His physical therapist told him they had tried everything so there wasn't anything left to work on.

Here’s what had been tried:

  • Glute strengthening

  • Dry needling in the low back

  • Foot positioning

  • Alignment work

All reasonable ideas.

But no one had focused on the obvious thing:

His knee.

After listening to his story and doing a simple assessment, the issue was clear that there was significant quad weakness in that knee.

The quad is the biggest muscle in the leg. It crosses directly over the knee. If it’s weak, that knee is going to take on stress it can’t handle.

We started with basic quad strengthening.

Nothing fancy.

And so far?

He’s training harder, moving better, and having less pain.

Our Approach Is Simple (On Purpose)

We’ve learned that starting with the lowest-hanging fruit leads to better results.

Instead of asking, “What’s the most complex explanation?” we ask:

  • What’s the simplest possible cause?

  • What’s the simplest explanation we can give?

Pain usually makes the most sense closest to where it’s showing up.

Knee pain → look at the knee
Hip pain → start near the hip

That doesn’t mean the rest of the body doesn’t matter. It just means we don’t skip the obvious.

Same goes for movement cues.

Instead of giving five things to think about, we try:

  • One simple cue

  • See if it works

  • Adjust from there

Less confusion. Better results.

The Big Takeaway

Pain doesn’t always need a complicated explanation.
Simple, focused plans often work best.

If you’ve been stuck in a loop of conflicting advice or treatments that haven’t helped, it might actually be helpful to try and simplify things and see what else could be the answer.
