One of the most common things we hear from people new to physical therapy is, "I wasn't sure what to expect." So, often, people will wait and put off going to physical therapy until it gets bad enough. Or, they'll just hope it goes away.
Physical therapy has a problem in that unless you've gone to physical therapy, you don't really know what it is, or what will happen. And, physical therapy also has a problem in that if you go to 5 different PTs, they might all work a little differently.
One thing we always encourage people to do is not wait to get help. Whether it's with us or not, very rarely does waiting help. All that usually does is make you miss out on things longer, be in pain longer, or just make the problem worse.
If you think you might need physical therapy or your doctor told you to go but haven't taken the first step yet, you're not alone. We can't tell you what it's like working with anyone else, but here's exactly what your first visit at District Performance & Physio looks like.
We start with a conversation.
Before we jump into any testing or treatment, we want to hear your story.
When did the pain start? What have you already tried? What are you hoping to get back to?
Whether your goal is running a marathon, getting through your workday without discomfort, or simply playing with your kids pain-free, understanding what matters to you helps us build a plan around your life, not just your symptoms.
Then we figure out what's really going on.
We'll guide you through a movement assessment and a few simple tests to better understand what's contributing to your pain or limitation.
This isn't about chasing pain or putting you through a long list of exercises. It's about identifying the root cause so we can focus on what will make the biggest difference.
We'll explain everything.
One of the things we hear from people that they appreciate most is finally understanding why something hurts.
We'll walk you through what we found in clear, straightforward language, answer your questions, and explain exactly how we can help. And, we try not to use any confusing medical jargon and make sure you could explain it to someone else.
You'll leave with a plan.
By the end of your first visit, you'll know:
- What's likely causing your symptoms
- What your recovery plan looks like
- What you can start doing right away to feel and move better
- What the next steps are and how we'll work together to get you back to doing what you love
You won't leave wondering what just happened or what comes next.
Our goal isn't just to help you feel better, it's to give you the confidence to move forward with a clear plan.
If pain has been holding you back, or you've been waiting for "the right time" to get it checked out, usually that means it's time. Very rarely do people tell us they wish they had waited to get started. 9 times out of 10 they say "I wish I would have started earlier".
Again, whether it's with us or someone else you trust, don't put off getting better and get back to doing the things you love sooner.
