“Do I have to do these physical therapy exercises forever?"
I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard that in my career. I think a lot of people think that the exercises you’re doing in physical therapy now are things you have to do the rest of your life to keep up the progress.
In our opinion, if you have to keep doing the same exercises forever to keep pain away, you probably haven’t actually solved the problem. Too often, people get discharged from physical therapy because they are not hurting anymore, or the PT thinks that there’s no more progress to be made.
To us, getting out of pain is just the first step. We want to also address what might have contributed to the problem in the first place, make you feel more confident, and maybe even get you stronger and more capable than you were before.
Here’s how we’d suggest measuring success if you’re dealing with pain or an injury:
-
Full return to your activity without any limitations
-
Full confidence and no fear of reinjury
-
A plan for what to do about it if it does come back
So, if you feel like you have to keep doing the same exercises the rest of your life, there’s a better way! That doesn’t give you confidence in your body and makes you feel like you’re fragile. We want people to believe that their bodies are super strong and can handle a lot, not like they’re a machine that needs regular maintenance every single day or week.
