From the Clinic:
There was a time when we were very strict about one thing:
Never round your back.
Deadlifting? Don’t round.
Picking up your kid? Squat straight down.
Sitting? Sit tall, always.
We thought spinal flexion (rounding your back) was something to eliminate entirely.
Over time, and after a lot of research and real-world experience, we’ve learned something important:
Rounding your back isn’t the real problem, being afraid of it is.
What We’re Seeing in the Clinic:
Spinal flexion, especially in the low back, often gets treated like it’s dangerous.
And yes—rounding under heavy load without preparation can cause issues.
But here’s the key takeaway:
Flexion itself isn’t bad, even under load.
Avoiding it completely is often worse.
When people are afraid to bend or round, we see them:
-
Move stiff and overly tense
-
Avoid normal ranges of motion
-
Feel pain during basic tasks like sitting or reaching
-
Get stuck feeling “strong, but fragile”
Why This Matters in Real Life
We can coach perfect movement all day, but real life doesn’t work that way.
At some point, everyone will:
If those positions have never been trained, that’s when problems happen.
The injury isn’t because the position was “bad”, it’s because the body wasn’t ready for it.
A Real-World Win
One client had dealt with back pain for over 20 years and lived in constant fear of bending.
Over time, we rebuilt trust in movement, slowly and intentionally.
Now?
He’s working on his farm, moving freely, and recently told us:
“I actually forgot I even had a back problem.”
That’s the goal. Not perfect posture, but confidence and freedom.
